Saving a Heritage Site

The goal of the Ebenezer Toronto Gore Historical Foundation was to save the building. Years of wear and weather had made the structure unstable. Funds were needed for critical repairs to the structure. Generous donations from members of the farm community as well as support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation made it possible to preserve this historic structure.
A cradle was built under the building and it was jacked up, allowing the construction of a basement foundation. Care was taken to preserve the original materials, and though it was brought up to current standards it still has the simple beauty of its original state. Many friends of the community donated their skills and countless hours of labour to help with the finish of the interior.
Now, as a community facility we must find ways of being self-sustaining. We are offering the use of our newly renovated hall with its public amenities as a space for functions and community events.

The church was built with solid brick supporting walls on a rubble stone foundation which had been subject to settling over the many years. For restoration it was necessary to underpin the wall and because the lower part of the north wall and north-west corner had separated those bricks had to be replaced. The plan was to include a full basement to accommodate modern heating and washroom facilities as well as usable space. The church had to be lifted to allow excavation of the basement.

The church is raised on the cradle and the lower part of the north wall and NE corner is removed.
